May 26 | Parent Update

 ASA families:

Well there are three more weeks or 15 instructional days left in by far the most unusual school year we will ever encounter. At the end, we will have spent close to 13 weeks in a distance learning mode. During that time, I believe we have once again, demonstrated why ASA is a special place made up of extraordinary families. Although it was an ideal situation, the teachers, parents and students stepped up to maintain a level of excellence that was surpassed by nobody. I am proud to be part of this community and I know that whatever decisions are made about our instructional model in the Fall, we will once again rise to the occasion.  Here are this week’s updates:

  • Our Memorial Day, virtual prayer service will be on Wednesday, May 27th at 10:00 am. The login information is below:

  • In last Thursday’s 12:15 parent update, I mentioned that Summer Academic Program was cancelled because of Governor Cuomo’s announcement on Summer School going completely distance this summer. That was an incorrect assumption on my part. The Governor’s announcement on Summer School does not prohibit us from having a program IF the restrictions on group sizes and child care are relaxed. I will continue to explore options and will update families as information becomes available. It is still my hope that we can have some sort of in school summer program.

  • This week’s parent meetings will be at 1:00 pm (I have a morning meeting) and 6:30 pm. Look for invites on Wednesday.

  • If we are unable to have an in-school summer program, I will work on a distance learning summer program that will be available to interested families at a reduced, very minimal rate. Please stay tuned.

  • The “We Love our Teachers” appreciation event is still planned for Friday, June 5th. I will have  a letter from the PSA that explains the event later this week.

  • Our last day of instruction for 2019-2020 is June 15th, 2020. We will have designated times for parents to come to the school and pick up their child’s personal belongings beginning on June 16th and concluding on June 19th. Schedules will posted next week.

  • The video submissions for the Egg Drop and the Variety Show are due on June 12th. I made a change to have them submitted on the same day so that Mr. Putman will have time to create compilation videos to be shown the following week. Here are some general guidelines for the videos:

    • All videos should be no more than 4 minutes.

    • Videos must be approved by the parent prior to submission and will be reviewed by administration before put into the compilation video.

    • There are no restrictions on video orientation, it may be landscape or portrait.

    • If you are using a recording device other than a cell phone or tablet, please send Mr. Putman ( or myself an email so we can make sure it is compatible.

    • When you are ready to submit, please email Mr. Putman ( so he can send Dropbox directions.

  • On June 11th, we will be celebrating our 8th grade class. I encourage students and their families to do something nice, such as making a picture or sign  for our graduating class and if there has been one (or more) 8th grader that has made an impact on your child’s life, feel free to make a note, card or letter to that student. We will be collecting physical and virtual cards for the class over the next week.

  • The 8th grade graduation ceremony has been postponed until later in the summer BUT I am still working on having a student only event around the time of the planned graduation. I expect to send more details later this week.

  • During this challenging time, I am asking that families that are uncertain about next year’s registration to please reach out to me so that I can be of assistance whether the uncertainty is with tuition or with the instructional model for the Fall. We are working to provide more clarity but sometimes having an individual discussion answers many questions and prevents some anxiety. Please reach out if you have questions.
